Water to Wembley

Water line to Wembley finally completed

Aug 1, 2019 | 4:09 PM

Aquatera announced today that the water line to Wembley is now officially complete, and water is now going through the taps of the town.

The completion of this project has been long-awaited, as discussions began early this decade after current Mayor Chris Turnmire, took office. Work to get the water from Aquatera’s water treatment plant south of Grande Prairie to the town didn’t begin until summer of 2018.

But after delays because of environmental conditions, leaks, and a few other roadblocks throughout the construction process, Turnmire says the town can finally enjoy access to the line.

“We’re now at that point where there will be no further restrictions for the residents of Wembley,” said Turnmire. “Just knowing that we have a long-term, potable water solution brings peace of mind to not only Wembley Town Council, but for the residents as well.”

In reflecting on the long process, Turnmire says he is grateful to Town Council, residents and Aquatera for all their support during this period. For him too, he says it’s a bit of a weird feeling to see the project come to an end.

“It’s very exciting, but it’s almost anti-climactic, I guess if I put it that way,” said Turnmire. “Not that it diminishes the importance, but it just seems like it was so long and so far away. We knew we were going to get there; we knew we were going to get the line hooked up.

With the line now fully operational, Turnmire can see Wembley seeing plenty more growth, especially to the north end of town around the dinosaur museum. Maybe even similar growth to what Clairmont saw when the water line went to the hamlet.

“I’m anticipating there will certainly be some growth there, as the economy continues to just kind of, grow,” said Turnmire. “We’re in that position, now that we’re able to provide water. I think that will be a positive, in terms of the future growth for Wembley.”

In a release from Aquatera, Interim CEO Jeff Pieper is also celebrating the completion of the highly anticipated line.

“For more than a decade, Aquatera and the Town have been working together toward a solution that would see Aquatera providing clean, safe, reliable water to the community of Wembley,” said Pieper. “Today marks an incredible achievement for both Aquatera and the Town.”
