Colder and wetter July than normal in Grande Prairie

Aug 7, 2019 | 6:52 AM

Mother nature hasn’t been too kind to the Swan City so far this summer with the amount of the rain the City and the region has received.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Dan Kulak revealed that July 2019 saw an above average amount of rainfall for Grande Prairie.

“Grande Prairie Airport for the month of July reported 88.4 mm. That compares to a long term average of 76.1 mm which puts this years July at the 25th wettest ranked in the last 85 years.”

A big storm on July 19 brought a downpour of rain and hail to the Swan City during the afternoon.

With the rain comes colder temperatures and due to the above average amount of rain the Peace Country did not experience many hot sunny summer days during the month.

“The mean temperature for the month averaged out to 15.6 degrees. The normal is around 16.2. Making it the 31st coldest July in 85 years,” added Kulak.

The bad news for residents of the Peace Country is this cold, wet trend is expected to continue for most of the week.

“The forecast we have for Grande Prairie for basically the first ten days of the month and even beyond that is cooler and wetter weather. The average daytime high in early August is around 22, but for this week we are going to see temperatures in the range of 15-19 degrees,” explained Kulak.

Kulak did add the warmest time of the year tends to be late July and early August, and as a result, we may be running out of time this year to experience those summer like temperatures.

The good news though is according to Kulak precipitation for the month of August appears to be normal.
