Deficit at Crosslink County Sportsplex higher than anticipated

Aug 12, 2019 | 3:21 PM

Documents presented at today’s County of Grande Prairie Council meeting show the Crosslink County Sportsplex is operating at a higher loss than budgeted.

It was a little at $330,443 in the red through the end of June. The budget was for $216,989.

General Manager Kelly Skotnitsky says ice time rentals are “maxed right out.”

“The field house is busy, but it could be a little bit more. Right now, in (summer), that’s normal with any field house. (It) has these problems when it gets warm outside and people want to be outside instead of inside.”

Skotnitsky says they are trying new things.

“We have lacrosse and ball hockey. We had ball hockey provincials, which was a fantastic event. We’re trying to do other things. We had a gun and sports trade show there last April, so we are doing different things. We’re creating new programs. This year, we had a 3-on-3 spring program which was very well attended by minor hockey in the area.”

He adds the Sportsplex is at the top of where it has always been when it comes to bringing in revenue and that rental rates are based on what the city charges.

“(We’re) probably subsidizing the rates right now, probably about 65 to 70 per cent. Unless the rates really rise up, they’d be far from a break-even level.”

Skotnitsky says a huge rental rate increase would mean fewer people renting facilities in the Sportsplex.

Council approved giving the facility an extra $70,000 to cover a retroactive wage increase included in a contract with workers who are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees at Monday’s council meeting.
