Homeless community members bring concerns to City Council

Aug 12, 2019 | 6:45 PM

The homeless community wants to see action taken to find an affordable housing plan, and soon.

City Council heard from members of the homeless community during their meeting on Monday, who told them their belongings and temporary homes have been displaced during visits from local law enforcement.

One of the men told council that some belongings of those temporarily living in front of the Rotary House had been taken by police to be thrown away.

With that, they said a protest is planned regarding the issue Tuesday morning in front of City Hall, and urged the council to address the problems.

Chris Manuel with the City of Grande Prairie, had the chance to step outside with them.

“I had an opportunity to step outside with them and gain a little bit better understanding as to what specifically they wanted to see addressed or where their main concern priorities were.”

Manuel says it was good they came to them with their concerns.

“I think it was a good opportunity for us to hear from two people that we regularly don’t get to an opportunity to engage with, that came forward with some concerns and questions.”

Manuel also has a lunch planned Tuesday to better figure out what the community needs from the City.

“To gain a better understanding as to why we’re seeing a proliferation of people in that circumstance, whether they’re people that have been in Grande Prairie for sometime, whether they’re people that come into Grande Prairie looking for opportunities and not finding them, or why we’re seeing the increases in the population that we’ve seen and secondly, how we can help them transition out of that lifestyle.”
