OUTDOOR POOL

Bear Creek Pool nearing completion: City

Aug 16, 2019 | 5:05 PM

The City of Grande Prairie says the outdoor pool is now in its final stages of the commissioning process, and should be open to the public later this summer.

The City says in a release that the pool has been inspected by Alberta Health Services, the Fire Marshal, and the Building Inspector. With that, they say only a few minor compliance items are left to be completed.

Water samples have been sent for testing, with results expected back by early next week. The City says the testing is done to ensure the pool is maintaining the proper balance of chemicals to meet Alberta Health Services safety regulations. With that, results must show the chemical solution in the pool has remained properly balanced for a full week to pass inspection.

The project has been met by countless delays, and completion has been eagerly anticipated by residents. In early July, the city said the latest challenge they were facing was the wet weather because it led to problems completing the application of multiple layers of pool basin coating. Each layer needed to be applied in dry conditions, with temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius. Each layer needs at least 48 hours to fully cure.

While they await results of the water samples, staff are preparing for training and orientation of the new site, including training on all the emergency procedures and on-site emergency equipment, as well as safe handling of the pool chemicals.

An official opening date will be announced once all health, safety and training requirements are met.

The City says though that they expect the pool to be open this year.
