Cleanup efforts underway following sour natural gas release

Aug 16, 2019 | 12:13 PM

On Tuesday, August 13, the Alberta Energy Regulator was alerted of a sour natural gas release into a tributary of the Beaverlodge River.

The incident occurred approximately 4 km southwest of Hythe on a pipeline owned by Canadian Natural Resources Limited.

Approximately 3 cubic metres of condensate and 4,000 cubic metres of sour natural gas was released.

At this time, environmental consultants are on the site collecting water samples of the Beaverlodge River and the tributary.

It has been determined there is no contamination in the Beaverlodge or Redwillow rivers, but there is in the tributary.

As a result, floating containment booms have been put in place.

No impacts to wildlife or aquatic species have been observed at this time.

The AER continues to remain on site to make sure all safety and environmental requirements are met during the cleanup process.

We will have more details on this as they become available.
