Expert panel to review supervised consumption sites, including Grande Prairie

Aug 19, 2019 | 12:32 PM

Grande Prairie will be one of a few Albertan cities where hearings regarding supervised consumption sites will take place.

The Alberta government has announced an eight-member panel to look at the social and economic effects of supervised drug-user sites in the province.

Grande Prairie currently has a mobile supervised injection site operating in the city, and is the first custom-built supervised injection site of its size in Canada.

In June, the United Conservative government announced they were pausing funding for proposed supervised consumption sites in Alberta.

The committee will be chaired by former Edmonton police chief Rod Knecht and will hold hearings next month in all cities with existing or proposed sites.

Those cities include Grande Prairie, Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat.

Jason Luan, associate minister of mental health and addictions, says they are committed to moving forward with a review of supervised consumption sites.

“We’ve heard Albertan’s concerns about impacts on their homes, businesses and communities. We’ve chosen a panel of experts to listen to Albertans, review the evidence, and report back on their findings.”

Albertans can share experiences and evidence of social and economic impacts of supervised consumption sites through public engagement sessions and online.

Details regarding dates and locations are being finalized and will also be available online.
