Federal government fund for military veterans goes towards tiny homes project

Aug 27, 2019 | 3:14 PM

A village of tiny homes for homeless military veterans in Calgary is one of four projects announced today as part of a federal strategy to help soldiers.

The programs are funded by the federal Veteran and Family Well-Being Fund for initiatives related to homelessness, employment and mental health.

15 self-contained homes with kitchens and bathrooms are to go up in Calgary.

A second village is planned for Calgary as well as one for Edmonton in the next year.

The Mustard Seed street ministry is also to provide mental health counselling and employment training.

Other programs are to help provide transitional housing and jobs and do research on military veterans in crisis.

The 2016 National Shelter Study estimated there are about 25-hundred homeless veterans in Canada.
