It’s a study in contrasts as Waterton Lakes continues to recover after a wildfire two years ago that burned through nearly 40 per cent of the national park.

Mountainsides are covered in charred trees, but there is lush new growth on the forest floor.

Parks Canada says wildlife populations seem to be healthy, but scientists are studying whether the ecosystem will ever fully recover.

Hiking trails and attractions have begun to reopen, but work is still being done to make roads safe and stabilize slopes.

A new visitor’s centre won’t be complete until the spring of 2021.
