NATURAL GAS ODORANT

High Levels of Natural Gas Odorant Noticed in Grande Cache Area

Sep 1, 2019 | 9:25 AM

Residents of Grande Cache may notice a much stronger than normal smell associated to their natural gas service.

AltaGas says the smell is due to the level of odorant in the natural gas increasing above standard levels, which was brought on by a system malfunction in the area.

Odorant is added to gas supply as part of normal gas distribution, as the harmless, non-toxic material assists in the detection of leaks.

However, it is also responsible for giving Natural gas its rotten egg smell.

AltaGas is assuring residents that the additional odorant does not pose any health or safety threats.

They are working though to bring odour levels back to normal, adding they expect the remaining smell to dissipate within the next few days, depending on weather and gas flows in the area.

Anyone with questions or concerns can call the AltaGas Customer Care Centre at 1-866-222-2067 between 8 am and 6 pm Monday to Friday.

However, a high volume of calls has AltaGas cautioning residents that it may take longer than expected for their technicians to respond to any concerns brought forward by residents.
