SWORD ASSAULT

Man who attacked grandmother with sword last year sentenced to time served, ordered to apologize

An Alberta man who attacked his grandmother with a sword while he was naked has been sentenced to 18 months of time already spent in custody and ordered to write letters of apology for his actions.

Marshall Rath was sentenced yesterday after entering guilty pleas in March to charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The court heard Rath was suicidal and drinking heavily when, as a 19-year-old, he attacked his grandmother in her Bragg Creek home last year.

The woman survived life-threatening injuries and needed extensive surgeries.
