Charges laid following altercation at Lethbridge hockey tournament

LETHBRIDGE, AB – UP-DATE: Police in Lethbridge have charged a man after an altercation was reported at a youth hockey tournament.

Standoff’s Robert Farrell Creighton has been charged with one count of assault. The 55-year-old is out of custody and will appear in court on October 9.

The incident in question happened on Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Quest for the Cup three-on-three tournament at the Crossings Ice Centre (ATB Centre) in west Lethbridge.

At around 2:00 p.m., police responded to a report of an assault. It’s since been determined that at the conclusion of a game, a 10-year-old male player was involved in a verbal dispute with a referee.

That escalated, and the youth struck the game official twice with his stick. The referee then pushed the player to the ice.

A group of adults, including coaches and a relative of the player, made their way on to the ice. A coach from the opposing team was pushed to the ground and the referee was punched multiple times by the player’s relative and a second man before the scuffle was broken up.

Police say the player’s relative was arrested without incident, but the second man left the arena. Police are attempting to locate him as of Monday morning, Set. 9.

Assault charges are pending against the 36-year-old man.

The 10-year-old boy was examined by emergency personnel but was not injured. The referee and coach both sustained non life-threatening injuries.

Police say the tournament organizer has been fully cooperative in the investigation. LPS added that an update will be issued once the second man has been found and charges have been sworn.

Video footage posted online shows a referee being accosted by a group of men. The incident is reported to have occurred at the Quest for the Cup 3-on-3 tournament at the ATB Centre.

According to Dean Millard, who shared the original 10-second clip on Twitter, a player allegedly slashed a referee. The game official then reportedly responded in a physical manner, leading to the incident shown in the clip.

High Performance Hockey (HPH) responded to the footage at their Facebook page, stating:

“Earlier today, an altercation occurred at our Quest for the Cup tournament. This incident is receiving significant attention on social media and should serve as an example to all about the importance of ensuring the rink is a safe place for our children. Actions like this have no place in our game.
The Quest for the Cup tournament is an opportunity for players to enjoy the game of hockey with their friends. For that reason, we are especially disappointed to see an act like this occur.”

HPH said they are fully cooperating with the Lethbridge Police Service as they investigate the incident.
