Comp edges Sexsmith, St Joe’s cruises in Thursday MPFL action

Sep 20, 2019 | 10:34 AM

The Mighty Peace Football League was under the lights at CKC Field Thursday, as it was home to a pair of games.

Thanks to three passing touchdowns in the first half, the GP Comp Warriors were able to take down the visiting Sexsmith Sabres 42-20 last night to move to 4-1 on the season. The loss is the Sabres first of the season.

The Warriors led 21-0 at the half, but the Sabres were able to draw within seven in the third to make it 21-14. That’s as close as they’d get, as the #8 ranked team in all of Tier I added two more touchdowns to seal the victory.

Before that game, the second-ranked Tier II squad n Alberta, the St Joe’s Celtics, had little trouble getting by the visiting Whitecourt Cats. They cruised to a 58-6 victory. The Celtics also move to 4-1 on the year.

Elsewhere in the MPFL, the Peace Wapiti Academy Titans thumped the Pioneers in Peace River 58-13. The Hillside (Valleyview) Cougars also picked up a victory at home, beating High Prairie 19-14.

Mighty Peace action will now shift to Whitecourt on Saturday, as the Junior Jamboree takes place. The event is a showcase for grade 10 and 11 players.

Action there will get underway at 10 a.m.
