City of Grande Prairie launches public survey on 2020 budget

Sep 22, 2019 | 7:00 AM

The City of Grande Prairie launched its public survey regarding the 2020 budget.

Residents of Grande Prairie can fill out a survey to identify which services they find the most important, as well as to share opinions and ideas in an online ‘idea space’.

There will also be an in-person session about the budget on October 8th, with more details to be released in the upcoming weeks.

Mayor Bill Given says this is a good opportunity for the public to be involved in city processes.

“It’s very important that the public are aware of some of the considerations that go into making the city budget, and ultimately we hope that residents will have a chance to express their relative priorities when it comes to what types of services they value from the municipality.”

Given expects issues such as property taxes and services to be points of tension.

“City staff and city council have demonstrated that we are well aware of the community’s desire for fiscal restraint, but we’re also well aware that there are some central challenges that Grande Prairie faces, and that we continue to be a growing community with a young population that needs services. Those are the kinds of things that Council considers when we are at the budget table.”

The results from the survey and online idea space will be reviewed ahead of official budget deliberations, which will take place from November 13 to 15, 2019.

In 2018, Council started a ‘budget reset’ year, where they approved a 4.1% reduction in taxes for the 2019 city budget.

In July, Council asked administration to begin the draft 2020 budget with a tax increase that does not exceed 1% of the best estimation of inflation.
