Former County of Grande Prairie Reeve Roy Borstad passed away on Sunday.

Born in 1932, Borstad moved to the Grande Prairie region in 1944.

He represented Ward 3 in the County and was Reeve until losing to Leanne Beaupre in the 2004 municipal elections.

He was also an avid supporter of sports, particularly senior hockey and softball, and also served on the 1995 Canada Games Committee.

He volunteered his time with Rotary, the Kinsmen Club, and was instrumental in starting outdoor skating ponds in what is now Muskoseepi Park during his time on the Grande Prairie Parks and Recreation Board from 1965 to 1971.

He also served on the Memorial Arena board in the 1960s and was instrumental in the installation of the first artificial ice surface in Grande Prairie.

He was inducted to the Softball Alberta Hall of Fame in 1988, and the Hockey Legends of Grande Prairie in 2004.
