Local youth get a lesson on farm safety

Some young people from around the Peace Country got some lessons in farm safety last week.

They gathered at Safe Communities in Grande Prairie on September 17 and 19 as part of the Young Farm Workers Program. This included sessions in various areas.

Safe Communities Acting Executive Director Cindy Blinston says there are several goals in mind with this program.

“We’re trying to help youth understand the rights and responsibilities around safety and introduce them to learning how to identify hazards and what to do to reduce the (injuries) the hazards could create.”

She adds lessons were given in four areas, including lifting and climbing safety.

“Because that is something that is in our daily lives regardless of where you live, farm or urban, it’s something we encounter, so we felt it was a very important piece to add.”

Blinston says another area of instruction was mental well-being.

“In Grande Prairie especially, we have our challenges there and we really want to get strong, healthy minds and bodies.”

The others were safety around power lines and equipment.
