Low levels in reservoir normal for this time of year says expert

Anyone walking along the trails near Centre 2000 or the College may have noticed there is little to no water in the Bear Creek reservoir in that area.

City Drainage and Environmental Supervisor Richard Sali says that is because the water flow in Bear Creek has slowed down.

“They typically get lower around this time of year and we’re just not seeing the flow. The gates have to remain open a little bit just to maintain adequate flow downstream. It’s part of our license to operate the spillway with Alberta Environment.”

He adds all their measuring devices are showing water levels are lower.

“Even with the rains that we have had, we’re just not seeing the flow from upstream that we’re usually getting. There could be beaver dams and what-not between here and Bear Lake, but we’re not seeing an excessive amount of water pooling anywhere.”

Sali says there is no reason to be concerned about wildlife.

“This happens almost every year. We don’t intentionally drain the reservoir level, it just comes down with the flow that happens throughout the year. The shorebirds are kind of loving it out there, there’s quite a few shorebirds that are in the reservoir now, just kind of hanging out in the creek there.”

Sali says there won’t be another huge stream flow this year unless there is a lot of rain.
