Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement that warns the first significant snowfall of the season is expected today through Monday for the Foothills and much of southern Alberta.

In the southwest, a winter storm warning has been posted advising up to 30 centimetres are possible in some areas by Monday and up to 60 centimetres in the extreme southwest.

The weather agency says snow also started falling along the central and northern foothills this morning and will spread south and east.

Calgary is expected to see five centimetres by Sunday morning, while areas near to and south of the Highway 1 corridor are forecast to get up to 25 centimetres.

The storm is predicted to spread into southwestern Saskatchewan — with potential accumulations by Monday morning of over 30 centimetres for the Cypress Hills area and 10 to 20 centimetres elsewhere.
