NWJHL weekend wrap: Kings, Flyers each win pair of games

Sep 30, 2019 | 9:02 AM

The JDA Kings used this past weekend to bounce back from a tough opening to the NWJHL season.

Following two losses to open the new campaign, the Kings posted back-to-back wins on Friday and Saturday.

Friday the squad made the short trip up Highway 2, where they held off the Sundown Oilfield Services Sexsmith Vipers for a 4-3 win. Blake Gillingham had a goal and two assists in the win, while Tanner Davy and Justin Rudyk added a goal and an assist each.

Saturday the Kings returned to the Crosslink County Sportsplex, where they posted a 6-3 win over the North Peace Navigators. It was a repeat performance for Gillingham, who scored once and assisted on two others. Davy scored two goals and added a helper as well.

Elsewhere around the league this past weekend, the Fairview Flyers were the only other team to go 2-0 on the weekend. Friday, they edged the Navs at home 3-1. They followed that up with a 5-3 win over Dawson Creek in Tumbler Ridge on Saturday.

The two other games over the weekend featured the defending champion Fort St. John Huskies. Friday, they fell to the Jr. Canucks 3-1 in the Mile Zero City. Saturday the Pups bounced back at home, defeating the Vipers 5-3.

Following last weekend’s action, the standings now look as such:
