Centaurs take first provincial crown since 2012

The Grande Prairie Centaurs have claimed their first provincial rugby title in seven years.

The Centaurs beat the Calgary Hornets 40-32 Saturday in Edmonton to take the Division 2 championship.

Team Captain Tyson Gejdos says the game came down to the last couple minutes.

“We were lucky enough to have a really strong first half and then just keep ‘er together at the end. It was a provincial final, so we were expecting a close game for the full 80 minutes.”

He adds nearly all of the Centaurs players are local products.

“That (is) the coolest thing about us. We have maybe two or three guys from New Zealand who’ve come over through work and family. We’ve got a couple kids that have come up through the high school program, playing at the Comp., St. Joe’s, and PWA. Everyone else has been brought out to try it and a couple years later, they stuck with it.”

Gejdos says there were 22 players with the Centaurs for that final, but between the two men’s teams, the club has between 35 and 40 players.

It took a total of 15 games for the Centaurs to win the championship. They will start up again with indoor practices in April at the Crosslink County Sportsplex. The 2020 season will get going in May.
