Close to 500 people will be in Grande Prairie later this week for the People of Action Conference.

It will start Thursday night and run through Saturday at the Tara Centre at Evergreen Park.

It is organized by Rotary International District 5370, of which the Swan City’s Tracey Vavrek is the District Governor.

“One of my wonderful opportunities to host an event where we gather people together, to come to celebrate, to grow, to build friendships, and to look at ways that we can best serve the world. As my home is Grande Prairie, I am very honoured that we’re able to bring this Rotary District conference to Grande Prairie.”

She adds the attendees will be coming from all over North America.

“We have guests coming from Canada, US, Mexico, and they’re coming to enjoy and hear about good things we’re doing at our district level. Our district, which is part of my responsibility as Governor, includes three provinces and two territories.

Vavrek says this is a chance to show off what the clubs around the District do in their communities.

“We are very excited to highlight the good work of Rotary City, which is our wonderful community. We’re also very excited with the level of speakers. We have high-caliber, international-level speakers that are joining us.”

Among the speakers will be author and journalist Amanda Lindout, who spent more than a year in captivity in Somalia.

The Conference starts Thursday night and runs through Saturday. Vavrek says there is room if anyone else wants to attend the conference.
