TEDx Event “Nostradamus: Visions of the Future” to feature 10 presenters in Grande Prairie

Oct 3, 2019 | 9:49 AM

Ten experts in various fields will take the stage at St. John Paul II Catholic School’s theatre for a TEDx event on Sunday, October 6.

The invited presenters are travelling from around the world to speak about a range of topics, from health and wellness to medicine, to reparations for Indigenous Canadians, to the oil and gas industry.

Dave Doyle, organizer of TEDx, says despite the range of topics, there is a common theme in all these presentations.

“The theme for our event is actually called ‘Nostradamus: Visions of our Future.’ So what we’ve asked all the speakers to do is speak from their platform with their talk, but spin it a little bit to give us a vision of what they feel the future will be like, based on the idea that they’re spreading from their expertise.”

Included in the list of speakers is Canadian author Oonagh Duncan, who will speak about her book on healthy living. CEO of Modern Energy, Chris Slubicki, will speak about the oil and gas industry. And actress, songwriter and activist Stephanie Harpe will talk about reparations for Indigenous Canadians.

Doyle adds that because this is a TEDx event, which is an independently organized version of TED Talks, the speakers will have limited time on the stage to make their presentation.

“So each talk is 15 minutes or less. So that is the fun and exciting part about a TED event, is that when you get there, you know that they’re very quick, very impactful talks that are very memorable. So a lot less of all of the fluff, and you’re not sitting for a two-hour keynote, you’re literally hearing a really impactful idea from an expert for 15 minutes or less.”

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday evening with the first speaker will take the stage at 6 p.m. Doyle says seating is limited in the brand new, state-of-the-art theatre, and is encouraging people who want to attend to find tickets online, as they may not be any available at the door.
