The Sexsmith Sabres had the lead at one point, but it didn’t last long.

The Sabres took a one touchdown lead midway through the second quarter, but ultimately fell to the St Joe’s Celtic’s 38-13 at CKC Field Friday evening in Mighty Peace Football League action.

The game was tied 7-7 when the Sabres put a nice drive together, culminating in a two yard touchdown run at the 6:24 mark of the second quarter. The snap was mishandled on the extra point, making it 13-7 for Sexsmith.

Though the Sabres defence had held firm through the early part of the game, the number two ranked team in all of Tier II football could only be held off for so long. On the ensuing Celtics drive, they marched down field, punching in a rushing touchdown of their own while adding the extra point, going up 14-13 with just over two minutes to go in the first half.

Then as quickly as the Sabres got possession of the ball back, it was gone on a fumble deep in their own territory, which led to the Celtics going to the air for another score to take a 21-13 lead.

The Celtics would get one more drive in with less then 25 seconds to go in the half. Two deep passes would lead to the opportunity for one more score as time expired, as the Celtics headed to the locker room with a 28-13 lead.

St Joe’s would add another touchdown and a field goal in the second half, while shutting out the Sabres to win their sixth game of the season.

The loss knocks the Sabres record down to 3-2 on the season, which can be seen as a bit deceiving. Sexsmith’s other loss came against the GP Comp Warriors, who are ranked in the top ten of Football Alberta’s Tier I rankings.
