A local author is one of four writers nominated for a Governor General’s Literary Award.

Sue Farrell Holler is a finalist for the award in the young people’s literature category and says she was in disbelief when she got the news of the nomination

“I come from a family of practical jokers and I really, honestly kept looking at it and wondering if they had doctored it, you know, my family had doctored it, playing some big trick on me. But, there was also an email from my publisher and from a slew of other people, so I knew it was real.”

The novel, Cold White Sun, follows an Ethiopian refugee who is smuggled into Canada.

Holler says it is based on a true story.

“It’s an absolutely incredible and inspiring story of resilience and hope.”

She previously wrote children’s books about her sons, as well as a middle-grade novel set on the Siksika First Nation.

The winners of the Governor General’s Literary Awards will be announced on October 29.
