GPRC women’s soccer undefeated in weekend set with Lakeland

Oct 7, 2019 | 8:08 AM

The GPRC Men’s and Women’s soccer teams have returned from the border city after a double header this past weekend with the Lakeland College Rustlers.

The Women’s squad leaves Lloydminster undefeated, as they won 5-1 on Saturday and pulled out a draw on Sunday.

Saturday’s game was all Wolves from the opening kickoff, as they fired 24 shots at Rustlers goalkeeper Nicole Pruim in the first half alone and led 3-0 at the break thanks to a flurry of goals from Sydney Kelly, Madi Gillespie and Emma Close. All goals were scored in a 3:38 span.

Close added her second of the game midway through the second half, while Cassidy Stromberg added one of her own. The Wolves ended the game with 34 total shots, 20 of which were on net.

Sunday the Wolves came out of the gates a little slower than the day before, finding themselves down 2-0 at the half.

Kelly scored twice in the second half to draw the game back even, but the Rustlers would answer two minutes after that in the 69th minute to retake the lead.

But Raina Kickbush saved the day in the 90th minute for the Wolves, beating Pruim to end the game in a 3-3 draw.

The women’s team now sits with a record of 3-3-2, in fourth place in the ACAC North Division.

Meanwhile the men’s side wasn’t as successful, as they went 0-1-1 on the weekend.

Saturday’s game ended in a 3-3 draw with Lakeland.

The Wolves, looking for their first win of the 2019 season, led 3-0 at halftime thanks in large part to a pair of goals from Pieter Boone.

However, the Rustlers would add three of there own in the second half, two of those coming off the foot of Chase Cal, ending the game in a 3-3 draw.

Lakeland then carried that momentum into Sunday’s tilt, with Cal adding two more in the first eight minutes of the game, and Giordano Ciccacci adding another one in the 11th minute to give the Rustlers the 3-0 lead. Rui Vale would add the lone Wolves goal in the 25th minute, in what would turn out to be a 3-1 victory for the Lloydminster side.

With that, the men’s squad remains winless on the season with a 0-5-3 record, sitting in sixth place in the ACAC North Division.

However, they’ll take a crack at getting their first W against the one team lower than them in the standings this coming weekend, as the Portage College Voyageurs visit the Swan City for two games.

Saturday the women play at 2 p.m. and the men at 4 p.m. Sunday the women play at noon and the men will follow at 2 p.m.

All games will be played at CKC Field.
