Beaverlodge’s Smith, Team Canada continue quest for Olympic berth

Oct 8, 2019 | 8:45 AM

UPDATE: Canada beat Cuba 3-1 in its first game. The Canadians play Costa Rica in their next game Wednesday.

Beaverlodge’s Dani Smith and the rest of Team Canada are gearing up for another chance to make it to the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games.

They begin play at the NORCECA Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship this afternoon when they take on Cuba in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The tournament serves as a second chance for North American, Central American and Caribbean teams that failed to make it to the January Olympic pre-qualifier, which goes January 10-12 in the Dominican Republic. The top three teams not already qualified for either the Olympics or the pre-qualifier will join the host Dominicans in the qualifying tournament for a chance to advance to the Olympic games.

Canada failed to qualify for either the Olympics or the January qualifier after going 1-2 at a qualifier in Russia this summer.

Smith and the rest of Team Canada will take on Costa Rica on Wednesday and Puerto Rico on Thursday in the round-robin. The playoff round will start on Friday with the gold and bronze medal matches going Sunday.

Tuesday’s match goes at Noon mountain time.
