Edmonton Public School Board says it will not change policies on gay straight alliances

Oct 11, 2019 | 4:53 PM

The Edmonton Public School Board says it won’t take advice on gay straight alliances from a group whose president had to apologize after equating a rainbow flag to a swastika.

The board says it will continue its policy of allowing students who join an alliance to decide for themselves whether to tell their parents.

It said earlier this week that school boards across Alberta had received a letter from the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms urging them to follow the new United Conservative government’s policy that allows teachers to tell parents when children join GSA’s.

Chairwoman Trisha Estabrooks says the Edmonton board is proud of its sexual orientation and gender policies that protect all students and won’t be changing them.
