WASTE REDUCTION

Aquatera, City begin Waste Reduction Week with clothing Drop n’ Swap

Oct 17, 2019 | 12:16 PM

This Friday will kick off Aquatera and the City of Grande Prairie’s Waste Reduction Week initiative.

Sarah Martin, the Public Relations and Communications Specialist for Aquatera, says the goal is to raise awareness.

“The goal of Waste Reduction Week is to inform people of the environmental impacts of waste and empower them to adopt more environmentally conscious choices.”

The initiative will kick off in Muskoseepi Park with a free clothing Drop n’ Swap in partnership with the Mamas for Mamas Grande Prairie Chapter and Grande Prairie Goodwill Industries of Alberta.

Martin says the Drop n’ Swap is a two-day event.

“On Friday, October 18, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., people can drop off their new and gently used clothing items and Halloween costumes to the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion. And then they can come back on Saturday, October 19 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. to swap those items.”

The leftover items from the swap will be collected by Goodwill and brought to the Grande Prairie location.

Martin adds that there are several easy changes people can make to lessen their waste.

“One of the things that we highly recommend is to have people take their own shopping bags to the grocery store, and you can just keep a couple in your car so you always have them on hand, and that will help reduce waste in terms of plastics and that sort of thing. We also recommend using your own reusable containers, so whether it’s a coffee container or a lunch kit, that sort of thing.”
