Storm add Michigan-born defenceman from BCHL’s Express

Oct 22, 2019 | 2:42 PM

The Grande Prairie Storm dipped back into the trade market and have added yet another player to their roster from the Great Lakes State.

The Storm acquired 19-year-old defenseman Joe Borthwick from the Coquitlam Express of the BCHL, in exchange for future considerations.

Borthwick becomes the third player to be added to the roster from the state of Michigan, joining the likes of Brent Loukus and Sam Erkkila. With that said, it was not a coincidence the team decided to go after acquiring the 6’1” blueliner.

“Joe was someone we were familiar with from scouting Brent and Sam with Team Michigan,” said Head Coach and Associate General Manager Matt Keillor. “He’s a dynamic skater and possesses good offensive instincts. Joe is very mature for his age and everyone we have spoken with has noted his high character and leadership in his game. I think he will be impactful in our room and will help boost our offense from the back end.”

Borthwick was in his first season with the Express, where he posted a goal and two assists in 10 games. Last season, he helped lead the Detroit Catholic Central High School team to a Division I state title, while scoring six goals and added 21 assists.

Borthwick is expected to join the club for their three-game road swing this weekend, which starts in Camrose on Friday.
