Knife incident sends PWA into lock down

Oct 24, 2019 | 2:22 PM

UPDATE: Grande Prairie RCMP responded to two schools for separate weapons reports on Thursday, October 24.

Students and staff at Peace Wapiti Academy were forced into a lock down Thursday afternoon, when a student brought a knife to school.

PWA staff called the RCMP at around 1 p.m. Thursday to report a 14-year-old male student who was threatening other students with a knife.

Officers arrived on the scene, quickly gained control of the situation, and detained the student.

The lock down was lifted shortly after 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, while responding to PWA, RCMP received another call at the neighbouring Harry Balfour School.

The 911 caller reported a person walking near the school with a firearm. Police responded while the school went into a hold and secure, and the investigation revealed it was a false complaint, and there were no threats to the school or neighbourhood.

No one was injured in either of these incidents, both of which are still under investigation by the RCMP.
