A Grade 12 student from the Peace Wapiti Academy (PWA) has been chosen for the 2019-2020 Minister’s Youth Council.

The council is for students to share different perspectives and discuss education issues.

Brookelyn Sorensen is among 40 youth selected for the council, and says she was very happy with the news.

“I was very, very excited. It came quite a shock to me to find out that there were over 200 applicants, and that I was chosen as one of them to be part of this incredible experience. It was amazing that I could play such a huge role in my society now, because I feel like everyone should get the chance to learn and work alongside like-minded individuals.”

Applications came in from across Alberta.

Sorensen says she is excited to have the opportunity to bring forth issues she sees in her own school.

“I think that one of the biggest issues in my school specifically is having overcrowded classrooms, to a point where teachers should be getting more assistance because it’s very hard to have a large class and only have one teacher present.”

She adds that she also feels smaller arts programs, such as photography, should receive better funding to keep them current and available, especially in smaller high schools.

Sorensen says she was interested in applying because she is passionate about engaged learning and was looking for an opportunity to make a difference in the community and for the future of others.

Members of the Minister’s Youth Council will share perspectives and discuss issues at three weekend meetings with the Minister of Education in October, February and May in Edmonton.
