Camp Hoo-Ha a big hit in Grande Prairie

Oct 31, 2019 | 5:51 AM

Camp Hoo-Ha has made its way to Grande Prairie.

Founder Mel McKay says it’s a lot like Girl Guides, but for grown-ups, with the idea of a skill-building club.

Started in Calgary two years ago, Camp Hoo-Ha is now in 12 cities in Alberta, B.C. and Saskatchewan. Grande Prairie is the latest chapter and they held their first camp this past September where participants learned about self-defence.

McKay said she was contacted by Janice Ryan whose sister had been coming to events in the Calgary/Okotoks area and she thought it would be something that would really catch on in Grande Prairie.

“We did a self-defence event that was off the charts,” McKay said of the inaugural event. “There seems to be a lot of excitement and momentum for it.”

The local chapter just had their second event on fashion and will be hosting their next event in November on wine education.

“It’s very much a club to learn about interesting things, mostly just a place to go and have fun and focus on yourself,” McKay said.

And yes, participants get badges.

A picture of the badge event-goers will get at GP’s next camp.

“They get really competitive about collecting the badges, and they get really creative in how they showcase them. I never really realized the badges would be that much of a deal, but they are a really big deal.”

The events are licensed to serve alcohol so participants must be legal drinking age.
