Jack-o’-lanterns will splatter at the 2nd Annual Sexsmith Pumpkin Smash

Rather than let the jack-o’-lanterns sit and rot on the front steps, why not watch them drop from an amazing height, and smash on the ground below.

The town of Sexsmith and the fire department have come up with a fun way to dispose of the festive gourds, by hosting the 2nd annual Pumpkin Smash. The free-to-attend event is fun for the whole family, and runs on Saturday, November 2, at the Robert W Zahara Elementary school.

Naomi Robinson, the Family and Community Support Services Director for the town of Sexsmith, says the volunteer firefighters are providing a majority of the fun.

“[The firefighters] will have a lift, where they take the pumpkins way up nice and high, then let them splat down onto the cement.”

The event is the brainchild of the fire chief, who used to attend similar events in his last job. The only requirement for dropping the pumpkin is that people remove the candles and any decorations, before they plummet to the ground.

Robinson says there will also be hot chocolate, baked goods, chili and hotdogs for sale, with all the proceeds going to the school’s extra curricular programs.

There will also be some giveaway prizes, a few little activities put on by the Wellness Coalition. The We Club will also be in attendance, collecting canned goods for Rotary House and the food bank.

The Pumpkin Smash runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
