Man sentenced to 11 years in fatal stabbing of one of two identical brothers

A man who admitted to fatally stabbing one of two identical brothers at an Edmonton bus stop when told they had no cigarettes to offer him has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Jonathan Soosay, who is 22, was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty last July to manslaughter in the death of Nathan Helfrich.

An agreed statement of facts read in court said Soosay approached the 28-year-old victim and his twin sibling, Matthew, on Jan. 24, 2018 and asked for a smoke.

When both said they only had e-cigarettes, Soosay stabbed Nathan twice in the chest.

Nathan died in hospital two days after the twins’ birthday.
