Athletics take NPHL season opener, Huskies take over first in NWJHL

The defending champion Grande Prairie Athletics opened the 2019-2020 NPHL season with a 6-3 win over the Falher Pirates.

Max McNeil and Tanner Labbe each had a goal and two assists to lead the attack for the A’s, who held period leads of 2-1 and 4-2.

Parker Sharp, Sam Bosek, Lyndin Himer-Lewis and Calvin Sanders also scored for Grande Prairie, while Morgan MacLean, Joel Peltier and Trevor Tokarz replied for the Pirates.

Meanwhile, the Fort St John Huskies moved into sole possession of first place in the NWJHL on Friday night with a 6-2 win over Dawson Creek.

Jared Winkel scored twice for the Huskies, while Jeridyn Loewen, Dean Whitcomb, Alex Nimmo and Jared Loewen added singles.

Dustin Bahm and Brandon Rowley replied for the Junior Canucks.

In other action, the North Peace Navigators pulled into a second place tie with Dawson Creek after a 3-2 overtime win over the Sundown Oilfield Services Sexsmith Vipers.

Theo Cunningham scored the winner at the 1:04 mark of the extra period to keep the Navs two points back of league leading Fort St John.

Robert Lemay and Cole Isaac also scored for North Peace, while Jace Grant and Clint Lefley replied for the Vipers.

All six teams in the league see action on Saturday, as Dawson Creek is in Sexsmith, Fort St John heads to Fairview, and the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings visit North Peace.
