NORTHERN ALBERTA DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL

Grande Prairie MLA Tracy Allard appointed chair of the Northern Alberta Development Council

Nov 9, 2019 | 7:00 AM

Grande Prairie MLA Tracy Allard has been appointed as the chair of the Northern Alberta Development Council.

The council focuses on strengthening the economies and the futures of the 150 communities and the 350,000 people in the region.

Allard says many people do not realize how much the north has to offer, and that was evident when she toured 17 ministers through Grande Prairie and area this past summer.

“Without exception, they would start the day and say, ‘yeah you know, it’s the north’, and not really get it, and by the end of the day, they were blown away. So, the north has a lot to be proud of and I hope that people feel encouraged, because I personally believe that we will be instrumental in leading the province out of the current economic challenges that we face.”

Allard currently serves on the Standing Committee on the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund and the Standing Committee on Alberta’s Economic Future.

So far, she says she has met with Grande Prairie City Council and has a few key meetings next week regarding economic development for northern Alberta.

Allard adds that while she may have entrepreneurial experience, she feels she needs to have these meetings to gain a deeper understanding of the right economic steps to take for the region.

She adds that she is very excited to be able to showcase not only the north, but the city of Grande Prairie.

“This community, the city of Grande Prairie, is a transformational place in terms of, we are innovative, we think out [of] the box, we do things differently. We’ve always, from the north, had to do more with less, simply because of where we’re located, and so this kind of challenging time is right in our wheelhouse in terms of actually making great strides.”

Allard says she is hopeful about the future.

“I hope that through this, people will hear more hope and less discouragement. I know it’s a challenging time for people, but I really believe that the brighter days are ahead.”
