Storm Drop finale

Saints come from behind to top Storm in Spruce Grove

Nov 25, 2019 | 8:11 AM

At the very least, the Grande Prairie Storm can say they claimed a point in all three games during their weekend road trip.

Despite holding a two-goal lead in the third period on Sunday, the Storm could not hang on as they fell 4-3 in overtime to the Saints in Spruce Grove. The overtime loss gives the Storm a record of 1-0-2 for the weekend set, following games in Lloydminster on Friday and Saturday.

Sunday’s contest was scoreless after 20 minutes, but both teams would get on the board early in the second period.

Brayden Nicholetts would jam home a rebound off the stick blade of Storm goalie Lars Kaliel to give the home side a 1-0 lead just 1:16 into the period.

Storm captain Jackson Wozniak would even things up less than two minutes later. With Juliano Santalucia sitting in the box for cross-checking, the Storm would clear their own zone. Saints goalie Maxence Duchesne would leave his net to play the puck but would have it stolen behind the net by Wozniak, who would wrap it around into the empty cage for his third of the season.

The Storm would take a 2-1 lead on the power play late in the second, as a Santalucia point shot would bounce through traffic onto the stick of Nathaniel Bierd for his fourth of the year.

Sam Erkkila would make it 3-1 early in the third period, picking off a Saints pass in the Spruce Grove zone, beating Duchesne glove side with a wrister. The goal was Erkkila’s fourth of the season.

The Saints would bring it within one midway through the third, as Ryan Peckford cleaned up a rebound in front. Spruce Grove would then tie it less than three minutes later, as Jordan Biro would tip home a Stanley Cooley point shot, sending the game to overtime.

The Saints would apply early pressure in the Storm end in the extra frame. Just 47 second in, a Ryan Conroy wrist shot would bounce off the blocker of Kaliel, ever-so-slowly trickling its way across the goal line for the game winner.

The Storm now fall to a record of 9-15-3 on the season and sit in sixth place in the AJHL North Division with 21 points.

The Storm will see the Saints for two games this coming weekend at Revolution Place. Both games on Friday and Saturday go at 7:30.
