National Addictions Awareness Week to run until December 1 in Grande Prairie
November 25 to December 1 is National Addictions Awareness Week, a week meant to increase awareness of issues related to substance abuse and problem gambling.
There will be different events taking place during the week that aim to talk about the benefits of addiction-free lifestyles. A full list of the events can be found here.
Korie-Lyn Northey, Alberta Health Services’ community addiction services administrator in Grande Prairie, says an important aspect of the week is to decrease the stigma surrounding addiction.
“It’s important that people understand (a) substance use disorder is a health condition, and it can be treated successfully. So, the words we choose matter. They can show compassion and understanding, and they can help if people choose their words wisely to reduce barriers to others accessing help.”
