Pet pig killed near Mayerthorpe may have been confused for a wild boar: RCMP

Nov 28, 2019 | 11:33 AM

RCMP think the shooting death of an Alberta family’s beloved pet pig may have been a case of mistaken identity.

The free-roaming pot-bellied hog, named Earl, was killed on a property near Mayerthorpe last Sunday, then butchered.

The family reported the shooting to police, who say there’s a large population of wild boars in the area with a bounty on them, so a hunter may have been thinking quick cash when they came across Earl.

Tex Schar, the pig’s owner, says the shooter may have been confused but it means they wouldn’t have known much about boars.
