City looking at crosswalks near St. John Paul II, St. Catherine schools

Dec 5, 2019 | 5:30 AM

City administration will be collecting information on the potential completion of pedestrian links near John Paul II Catholic High School, Saint Catherine School and Trader Ridge by next year.

Representatives of the Grande Prairie & District Catholic School Board presented to city council on Monday, about the issues they see at the schools, specifically a lack of lights, sidewalks and crosswalks putting the students and teachers at risk of accidents or injuries.

Catholic Board Chair Michael Ouellette, says he is hoping for improvement in the areas by the new school year.

“We always get a good reception from the City. The City understands that. “Like I said at the end, I can’t put a dollar figure on safety for the kids, I can’t do it.”

Other requests made were for temporary upgrading of an intersection at 108 Street and 132 Avenue and sidewalk installations, but no immediate decision was made regarding those.

City administration says lights will be coming with more development in the area, but that they are expensive to do before the roads are in their final alignment.
