First ever Alberta North Sport Conference viewed as big success

The first ever Alberta North Sport Conference has come and gone and was viewed as a big success.

The conference provided 65 plus sport leaders from 37 different organizations in the north region with new tools and beneficial takeaways about everything from preventing bullying, harassment in sport, sport nutrition and optimal performance, building effective practices, managing behavior and expectation for coaches, parents and athletes and so much more.

“The conference was on safe sports. We did everything from injury prevention for High School athletes, policy work, looking at better ways to help small business who do participate in sponsoring teams, and setting expectations for athletes, coaches, and parents on behavior.” Said Karna Germsheid, the Executive Director for Grande Prairie Sport Connection.

Germsheid says that another major topic that was also discussed was the how the culture of sport is changing and volunteers need to know what resources are available to them:

“A lot of people feel very vulnerable when they’re volunteering in these organizations. I think that they took away some reassurance that there’s resources that are available out there and some new information on what they can do to protect themselves.”

The conference is hoped to return in 2021 and will likely become a bi-annually event.
