Clairmont Arena closed until further notice due to potential safety concerns

The arena in Clairmont has been closed until further notice due to a leaky roof and potential safety concerns.

The County of Grande Prairie was notified by the Clairmont & District Agricultural Society of the closure on December 3.

“We appreciate this was a difficult decision knowing the impacts for many of our user groups, but we respect the Society’s decision,” says Reeve Leanne Beaupre. “The County is committed to assisting the Clairmont and District Agricultural Society in determining the structural status of their building.”

County officials and the Agricultural Society say they have worked to find alternative facilities to accommodate the user groups such as hockey, ringette and public skating, who are affected by the closure.

“We have been working with the Society on an ongoing basis regarding their concerns with facilities they operate,” says Christine Rawlings, Parks & Recreation Manager. “At their request, we moved forward with obtaining a quote for and engineering study on the arena, which Council will be reviewing on Monday, December 9. If the work is approved, we can expect the engineer’s report to be completed by mid-January 2020 and have a better idea of what may be needed to ensure the safety and integrity of the facility.”

The County and Society say affected groups have been notified directly, and that they will provide updates as more information becomes available.

“Public safety is our number one priority at the Clairmont Arena,” says Clairmont & District Agricultural Society President Cindy Trudel. “We appreciate user groups’ patience during the facility’s closure while we work to find a solution.”
