Canadian teams fall on opening day of World Junior A Challenge

Both Canadian entries dropped their openers at the 2019 World Junior A Challenge kicked off in Dawson Creek.

Carter Savoie of the Sherwood Park Crusaders had a goal as Canada West dropped a 3-2 decision to the United States.

Brendan Budy had the other goal for Canada West, who scored both of their goals on the power play.

Matt Davis of the Spruce Grove Saints made 36 saves in the loss.

Meanwhile, Vasil Ponomaryov scored a power play goal with 51.9 seconds left in overtime as Russia edged Canada East 3-2.

Jeremy Laframboise and Dovar Tinling scored for Canada East in the loss.

The CZech Republic will play their opening game Sunday afternoon at 2 pm against Russia, with the two Canadian teams going head to head in the evening matchup at 7.
