City Council holds last meeting of 2019

Dec 17, 2019 | 4:30 AM

Grande Prairie City Council held its last meeting of 2019 Monday.

Council has approved having Mayor Bill Given write a letter to K Division, the head office of the RCMP in Alberta, asking that Grande Prairie be included in a pilot project that would involve online crime reporting.

A copy of that letter would also go to the office of Alberta Justice and the Solicitor General.

A setup like this one is already being used in B.C.

One issue locally is that online reporting tools are not compatible with the national record management system used by the Mounties.

Six grants approved

Council has approved three grants under its Park Improvement Grant Program

The Grande Prairie Cricket Association will be getting $10,300 to install synthetic turf on its pitch in the Northridge area.

The group started a few years ago and already has a half-dozen teams and a provincial championship.

Also, the Crystal Heights and Ivy Lake Neighborhood Association will get $4001 to build a new orchard in Crystal Heights Park near the 89B Street cul-de-sac.

There is also $4834.73 for the Country Club Neighbourhood Association to put a fence around an existing orchard in Country Club Estates Park.

It is located east of 94 Street between 66 and 67 Avenues.

Council also approved close to $10,000 worth of grants under its Neighbourhood Enhancement Matching Grants program.

The Signature Falls Neighbourhood Association will use its $5000 grant to install a rink conversion kit at a multi-sport surface, allowing it to be used year-round.

The Hillside Neighbourhood Association is getting $4000. It will work with the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association to create a place for community gatherings at the Veterans Memorial Gardens and Interpretive Centre.

The Swanavon Neighbourhood Association will establish a gathering place, which will include an archway and bench, with the $1800 grant it is getting.

City Committee meetings resume January 7, with the first Council meeting of 2020 set for January 13.
