Santa spreads Christmas cheer at QEII hospital

Dec 19, 2019 | 1:20 PM

Santa Claus left his sleigh at home, and took a helicopter to the Queen Elizabeth II hospital to visit children in the pediatric ward.

Leaving the reindeer back at the North Pole, Santa, along with an elf and a big bag of toys, was dropped off on the helipad outside the hospital by STARS Air Ambulance.

Manager of Pediatrics and NCIU at the hospital, Greg Schmidt, says this is the 10th year STARS has helped Santa deliver gifts and holiday cheer to the patients at QEII, and he’s very grateful to the service.

“Stars has come through for that, over and over again. It’s a great way for Santa to get around, and let his reindeer rest up for Christmas night, and it’s fantastic, so we really appreciate that.”

Schmidt says the unit is pretty full, with around 24 kids in the unit to be visited by the jolly bearded man. Santa also took a tour around the other departments and medical units, to bring some holiday joy to other patients.

Schmidt says it’s exciting and heartwarming to see Santa drop in and deliver gifts and Christmas cheer to the kids and their families.

“This is a huge deal for the unit, and for the kids up here. It’s hard to be in the hospital anytime of the year, but particularly over Christmas, so it’s great to get a little smile on their face.”
