It was a battle of the top two teams in the NPHL Thursday night, as the Grande Prairie Athletics battled the Dawson Creek Canucks.

Linden Lewis scored the overtime winner to give the Athletics the 7-6 victory.

The scoring kicked off with two Athletics goals coming on the power play. Sam Bosek and Bryce Lipinski tallied for the Athletics to put the team up 2-0 after the first period.

The second period featured a back and forth tilt between the two teams.

The Canucks came out and caught the Athletics napping. Braeden Alkins would add two goals, while Liam Craig and Owen LaClare would also score to put the visitors up 4-2 with 14:21 left in the second period.

The Athletics would make things interesting after the 4-2 goal. Brandon Crone would add the Athletics third power play goal of the night to make it 4-3.

Before the period would end, the teams would trade goals and it was 5-4 heading into the third period.

In the third period Bosek would add his second of the night in the first five minutes of the period to make it 5-5.

From there the game would tighten up. Lipinski would give the Athletics a 6-5 lead with 3:03 to play, but the lead wouldn’t last long.

LeClare scored the tying goal for the Canucks to knot the game at 6-6 just 45 seconds later.

In overtime, the Canucks Evan Weaver would take a tripping penalty with 49 seconds remaining to put the Athletics on the power play.

From there it was Linden Lewis scoring to give the Athletics the 7-6 victory.

Both teams head into the Christmas break near the top of the standings.

The Athletics sit at the top with 19 points while the Canucks sit two points behind them in second place with 17 points.

The Athletics will return to action on January 3 when they travel to Manning.
