Grande Prairie RCMP targeting impaired drivers over holiday season

Dec 20, 2019 | 4:07 PM

Throughout the month of December, the Grande Prairie RCMP will be conducting impaired driving initiatives, aimed at keeping roadways safe this holiday season.

The RCMP Traffic Unit has organized several multi-day check stops across the region, utilizing the Mobile Breath Test Unit.

The first of the check stops took place this past weekend, allowing police to check a significant number of motorists.

During the three-day initiative, 1546 drivers were checked and given roadside breath samples, in accordance with the new Mandatory Alcohol Screening laws.

The results included:

  • Four people arrested and charged with criminal impaired driving.
  • 2 people issued a 24-hour driving suspension.
  • 15 provincial violation tickets
  • 6 other provincial sanctions.

RCMP consider this initiative to be highly successful, as several impaired drivers were removed from city streets.

Grande Prairie RCMP will be conducting further check stops within the city for the remainder of the holiday season.
