Local curling team looks for berth in provincial championship

Dec 20, 2019 | 2:55 PM

Cortland Sonnenberg’s rink from Grande Prairie will be looking to qualify for the 2020 Junior Men’s Provincial Championship this weekend.

The Grande Prairie Curling Club is hosting the provincial qualifiers Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament features both a men’s and women’s division.

The men’s side of the draw also features teams from St. Albert, Sherwood Park, and Leduc.

The women’s side will also have teams from St. Albert and Sherwood Park.

The tournament will kick off at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning with three games.

All four teams on the men’s side will be playing. Team Molberg from St. Albert will face Team Sonnenberg and Team Lozinsky from St. Albert will take on Team Lis, which features players from Sherwood Park and Leduc.

Because there are only two teams on the women’s side, Team Bartz out of St. Albert will take on Team Crough from Sherwood Park in a best of three series.

Provincials start New Year’s Day in Lloydminster.
