Province encouraging shoppers to think local this holiday season

Dec 20, 2019 | 12:41 PM

The province is encouraging people to buy local food for their holiday feasts.

In a release, the provincial government says such things are available at 140 farmers’ markets across Alberta and that many stores and restaurants get their products from local producers.

The government says local food sales at farmers’ markets and through direct marketing to consumers has topped $1-billion, twice what it was in 2008.

That same release says food and beverage manufacturing had $15-billion in sales last year, making it Alberta’s second-biggest industry.
