New Year's Eve @ Muskoseepi

City preparing for fireworks and festivities to ring in new year

Dec 29, 2019 | 7:00 AM

If you’re looking for somewhere to ring in the new year, and the new decade for that matter, the City of Grande Prairie will once again be hosting their New Year’s Eve celebrations in Muskoseepi Park that evening.

The annual celebration goes in the park from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Recreation Programming and Events Supervisor with the City, Hayley Kramps, says they have plenty of fun activities planned for the whole family.

“We’ve got some live performers coming in, we’re going to be doing some snowshoeing, serving some hot chocolate. There will also be some skating on the pond, as well as horse and wagon rides around the park.”

There will also be face painting and cookie decorating for the kids. Snowshoes will also be free to rent from the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion during the event. The horse and wagon rides, as well as the hot chocolate, will cost $2 each.

Following all of those activities, Kramps says the night’s big event will get going at 10 p.m.

“Our fireworks are always very largely attended. It’s one of the things that everybody in Grande Prairie typically tends to look forward to on New Year’s Eve.”

“I grew up here, and I always attended the fireworks growing up. It’s a very family-oriented event.”

Should the weather not cooperate, with temperatures dropping below -25 degrees, the event would be cancelled. The forecast for Grande Prairie, though, looks like it will hold out for the event.

“I’ve been checking the forecast pretty regularly here, so I’m hoping it’s going to be as good as it says it is,” said Kramps.

As well, should the wind speed be over 40 km/h, the fireworks would have to be cancelled.

The City will post any updates or changes to the event to both their website, as well as their Facebook page.
